IAGA Sponsorship for Meetings

IAGA provides sponsorship for people interested in organising meetings under its remit, especially for students, early career researchers or scientists in developing countries. The funding can be used for various purposes such as registration fee waiver or enabling participation of participants who otherwise wouldn't be able to travel by supporting their travel/accommodation costs. There are two rounds of applications open- end of May and November- each year with outcomes aimed for June and December, respectively.

The ideal time for submitting funding request is a year before the event, with details of the meeting such as venue, dates and scientific focus. The submission is made to the Secretary General and is evaluated by the Executive Committee. The funding capacity may differ for different years but in general, the maximum amount is about 3000 EUR.

More details can be found here. Please feel free to leave your queries in the comments below and we will answer them.

IUGG Support: Call for Proposals

The International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), of which the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) is a member, is offering sponsorship for symposia to be organised in 2025. One of the main aims of IUGG is to promote geophysics through international collaborations and an important role is played by scientific meetings in achieving this.

IUGG funds can be used to provide support to students and early career researchers as well as increase representation in meetings from underdeveloped countries. About 10-15 meetings (up to USD 10,000 each) can be supported through this call for symposia proposals.

The meeting organisers should contact their respective Secretary Generals (for IAGA, visit this page to know the Executive body members) before mid October. The Secretary Generals of each association would then submit their recommendations to the IUGG Secretary General by 31 October 2024. The IUGG bureau will make the final selections by December.

Don't hesitate to get in contact with the IAGA Executive Committee to know more about the call and visit this webpage for more information.

EMIW 2024 in Beppu, Japan

Division VI of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) biennially organises a workshop on electromagnetic induction in the Earth and other planetary bodies since 1972.

This year, the 26th ElectroMagnetic Induction Workshop (EMIW24) will be held in Japan's southern island in Beppu from 7th to 13th September 2024. The registration and abstract submission are currently open and financial assistance is also available for students and early career researchers.

The registration fee includes an ice breaker event on the first day, a farewell dinner on the last as well as an excursion. The deadline for both the financial support and early bird registration is 15th April 2024. The program comprises of multiple sessions such as instrumentation, modelling and inversion results for global and planetary EM fields. In addition, there are two special programs- Instrument Demonstration and Women Networking. The week long workshop is packed with exciting events and science.

Head over to the website for more information about the workshop and details to attend!

IUGG Public Days

The 28th General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) taking place in Berlin, Germany is right around the corner. The conference, from 11th to 20th July 2023, has 3 public days where interested people are welcome to know more about trending research and innovations in geoscience.

On 14th, 15th and 16th July, everyone can attend the exhibition hall B for free and interact with researchers about current geoscience inventions. Special highlights include the GFZ stand as well as the NASA exhibition. The local planetarium will also be present.

You can indicate your interest by answering three questions here.

More about other exhibitions can be found here. You can also look at the list of sponsors and exhibitors that will be present at IUGG. See you in a week at the conference!

IUGG ECR events

The 28th General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) will take place from 11-20th July 2023 in Berlin, Germany. The conference has tons of scientific and outreach sessions pertaining to all the 8 associations within IUGG. But more interestingly, for Early Career Researchers (ECR), there will be events catering specifically to their role in the community.

Within the 'Big Themes' sessions of the assembly, many different events will be organised. One of them is focussed entirely on the worries and needs of ECRs. The 'Early Career Scientists: Needs, Wishes and Demands' session will be held at the conference venue on Sunday, 16th July from 12:15 to 13:15 local time. A social evening will be held on Saturday where questions will be developed that will be answered by panel members on Sunday. The events can be attended only by ECRs registered for IUGG. A registration is also required for the social, the details of which have been sent by email to all participants.

Other events in the 'Big Themes' include sessions on equality, diversity and inclusion, the changing practises in science as well as contributions to international frameworks. Even without the events, IUGG will be a great platform for people of all associations to meet and interact with each other. After the pandemic, this will be a major face-to-face event in the community. Look out for sessions beyond your field!

More details about the events can be found here. Additionally, more events within the 'Big Themes' can be found here.

6th IAGA Summer School

The 6th IAGA Summer School will be conducted from 6th to 11th July 2023 in Niemegk Observatory, Germany. As always, it is conducted in the week before the General Assembly. The IUGG Assembly will take place in Berlin, Germany from 11th to 20th July 2023.

IAGA will sponsor around 20 early career researchers (ECRs) to attend and stay at the summer school. The school provides a chance to interact with fellow ECRs in the community and gives an understanding about a wide range of topics relating to magnetism and aeronomy.

The last date to apply is 30th September. ECRs need to fill the application form and submit it to the head of the IAGA Division they belong to. To know more about the application process, click here.

Upcoming IAGA events

A lot of science happening... Mark your calendars for what interests you in the upcoming IAGA events!

SEDI Conference 2022

The 17th Symposium of the Study of the Earth's Deep Interior will be held in Zurich, Switzerland from July 11th to 15th, 2022. SEDI aims for an understanding of the evolution of the Earth's deep interior and the effects it has on the structures and processes observed on the surface.

The meeting will be hybrid and the programme can be found here.

EM Induction Workshop 2022

The 25th Electromagnetic Indiction Workshop will be held in Çeşme, Turkey from September 11th to 17th, 2022.
